JPEG Compression

When you compress a digital file, you remove bits of information to minimize the total size. There are two types of compression: lossless, which decreases file size while maintaining quality, and lossy, which reduces both size and quality.

Because of the nature of JPEG files, only lossy compression is possible for these photos. However, you can adjust the amount of compression applied to the image to achieve a satisfactory balance between file size and image quality.

Why would anyone want to compress a JPEG ?

JPEG s can get quite large. A high-resolution shot taken with an expensive camera, for example, could be very large. This will cause the photo to take up a significant amount of space on your hard drive. In this scenario, compression could be a valuable technique for reducing the size of the photo, allowing you to avoid deleting it.

Smartphone JPEG s are particularly attractive candidates for compression. Most smartphone cameras produce photographs in JPEG format. If you have a large collection of high-quality images on your phone's internal storage, they may be taking up a lot of space. Compressing those files could mean the difference between having to delete/back up some photographs or keeping them just as they are.

How do you compress a JPEG ?

Our compression tool on this website is free, simple to use, and does not require you to download any software. There are no watermarks, no registration is necessary, and you can use the tool as often as you like.

To begin, click the "Upload Files" button and select your JPEG or JPEG files. If you prefer, you may drag and drop your files into the "Drop Your Files Here" section.

Once uploaded, our program will intelligently calculate the best compression ratio for each image. That ratio will appear as a thumbnail in the queue. If you believe a picture should be compressed more or less than our system determines, that's fine; you may control it. Press the photo you want to fine-tune and use the quality slider to change to your liking. Once you're satisfied, click the "APPLY" button. Repeat these procedures for all of the photographs you've uploaded until you're satisfied.

Once ready, click the "DOWNLOAD ALL" option. You will receive a ZIP archive containing all of your compressed JPEG s. If you don't want a ZIP file, that's fine; you may download each image separately by clicking the "DOWNLOAD" button beneath each thumbnail. If you want to compress more photographs, click the "CLEAR QUEUE" button to restart the process.
